Privacy laws govern who can apply for birth and marriage certificates. Death certificates will be issued to any person but a certified copy of the registration will only be issued to an executor of the estate or next-of-kin of the deceased.

Births 1869-1906, Marriages 1869-1921 and Deaths 1869-1931 are currently available for public search. All remaining indices are closed to public search and are held by the Registrar General of Ontario.

Indices are by year by surname available at Archives of Ontario, many public libraries and LDS Family History Centres or Family History Library

Some OGS branches have published indices for events occuring in their area.

Note:   Marriages 1869 through 1873 are indexed in a series of printed volumes by year, by surname and further arranged by county. These volumes can be found at the Archives of Ontario and at public libraries.

Pre-1900:
Not indexed. Archives of Quebec require date and place of event before it will search for and issue a certificate. Best to attempt a search of church registers yourself. Franco genealogy society published indices of many church registers independently which may be available at various locations throughout Canada and worldwide.

Cyprian Tanguay:
Published two dictionaries of Quebec genealogies dating back to first settlers. Arranged by surname, by male given name, by marriage date and includes marriage date, name of father of each of husband and wife with identifying numbering system, names of children and dates of their birth or christening, marriage date and spouse of children (if applicable), and death or burial date of child. Available at many public libraries or on CD-Rom from Global Genealogy

Stringent privacy laws govern who can apply for birth and marriage certificates. For current certificate applicant must provide information that matches exactly the information shown on the certificate otherwise no certificate will be issued. Death certificates will be issued to anyone who can furnish information and reason that is satisfactory to the Director of Vital Statistics. Baptisms prior to 1886 are at Public Archives and Records Office. Post-1900 births are restricted by privacy laws.

Marriages 1787 to 1923 (1813-1824 missing), marriages licenses 1831-1907 and marriage bonds 1849 to 1902 are at Public Archives and Records Office. Post-1910 marriages are restricted by privacy laws.

Deaths prior to 1906 are at Public Archives and Records Office.

Vital Statistics advises that sources other than civil BMDs should be consulted for genealogical information wherever possible. Some BMDs registered starting in 1895 while Saskatchewan was still considered as being in the Northwest Territories.

Saskatchewan became a province during 1905 at which time BMDs became the responsibility of the province.

BMDs kept more systematically as of 1920 but full registration was not achieved until 1930.
