List and Index Society Reference Guide
Dear Reader: Since the respective dates of original publication, numerous volumes produced by the List and Index Society have been found to contain many errors and omissions. Additionally, many of the records had not been detailed sufficiently to make for efficient searches in the original documents in all cases. This holds true particularly of the Exchequer documents in the class E179. Consequently, the National Archives is in the process of re-indexing this record group and making the results available for search on its' website.
The description of the contents of many of the List and Index Society volumes, as shown below, is lacking the full references to calendars and indexes that were included in any one volume. Many of the volumes that were published included calendars and indexes to more than one group of records. Additionally, there are several volumes for which I have been unsuccessful in obtaining a description of the contents. Those volumes include numbers 81, 129, and 135. As additional information concerning the contents of the collection comes into my knowledge, I shall update this page.
The List and Index Society Special or Supplemental Series have been designated in the table below following the description of the main series volumes, in volumes commencing with the letters 'SS'.
In addition to the sources noted in the column headed 'Location', many major university libraries have reasonably good collections of the various volumes. Special-interest societies, such as the Society of Genealogists in London, England; local studies sections of British libraries and family history societies may also have some of the volumes produced by the List and Index Society.
