Biography
Harris’ son and namesake has long been mistaken as the MP elected for Okehampton in December 1709 when in fact it was Harris himself. This Christopher Harris was a younger son who had established himself as an attorney and resided near Penzance, but on the death of his brother William in October 1709, when he was described as ‘about 52 years old’, he inherited the family’s extensive estates in Devon and Cornwall, and in the ensuing by-election succeeded to his late brother’s parliamentary seat. He obtained an unopposed return in 1710, was classed as a Tory in the ‘Hanover list’ of the new Parliament, and was subsequently listed among the ‘worthy patriots’ who during the first session of that Parliament supported exposure of the mismanagements of the Marlborough– Godolphin administration. He voted with the ministry on 18 June 1713 in favour of the French commerce bill. His particular patron was Lord Lansdown (George Granville*) who on his behalf sought favours from Lords Strafford and Oxford (Robert Harley*), describing Harris as having a ‘considerable estate and interest in both the counties of Cornwall and Devon’. In the next Parliament Harris initiated a bill to enforce previous legislation concerning the navigation of the Itchen. The Worsley list and other analyses of the 1713 Parliament described him as a Tory. He was re-elected in 1715 and stood down in 1722, but the date of his death has not been ascertained.3

General Discussion
Erysipelas is an infection of the upper layers of the skin (superficial). The most common cause is group A streptococcal bacteria, especially Streptococcus pyogenes. Erysipelas results in a fiery red rash with raised edges that can easily be distinguished from the skin around it. The affected skin may be warm to the touch. At one time, erysipelas was thought to affect mostly the face, but recent studies suggest that the distribution of the inflammation is changing since at the present time the legs are involved in almost 80% of cases. The rash may also appear on the arms or trunk.

Erysipelas begins with minor trauma, such as a bruise, burn, wound, or incision. When the rash appears on the trunk, arms, or legs, it is usually at the site of a surgical incision or a wound.

Signs & Symptoms
Erysipelas usually first appears as a localized lesion that is tender and red. The lesion quickly develops a bright red, shiny color and a spreading, raised border. The typical lesion is so characteristic that its presence is diagnostic. The lesion may feel hot and be painful. There may be accompanying high fever, chills, headache, nausea, and a general feeling of ill health (malaise). The skin in the affected area may resemble the peel of an orange.

In infants, erysipelas may appear on the abdomen due to infection of the umbilical cord. In children and adults, erysipelas most commonly develops on the legs, arms and face. Erysipelas may also develop at sites of minor surgery or trauma, or it may be due to lymphatic obstruction.

Causes
Erysipelas is caused by one of several strains of streptococcus bacteria, or less frequently by a staphylococcus infection. Streptococci are involved in about 80% of cases.

Affected Populations
Erysipelas is a fairly common infection that may affect anyone at any age. It is most common in infants, young children and the elderly, including adults of either sex between ages 60 and 80.

Related Disorders
Symptoms of the following disorders can be similar to those of erysipelas. Comparisons may be useful for a differential diagnosis:

Orbital cellulitus is a bacterial infection characterized by inflammation of the tissue surrounding the eye. Symptoms may include pain in the eye socket, abnormal protrusion of the eyeball, impaired movement of the eye, swelling of the eyelid and fever.

Herpes zoster is a viral infection of the central nervous system. It is characterized by the eruption of blisters, nerve pain and severe itching of the skin. The involved skin is usually very sensitive and painful. (For more information on this disorder, choose “Herpes Zoster” as your search term in the Rare Disease Database.)

Contact dermatitis is a common acute or chronic skin inflammation triggered by substances that one is allergic to which come in contact with the skin. It is characterized by red, itching, oozing, crusting, scaling, burning and painful skin. (For more information on this disorder, choose “Contact Dermatitis” as your search term in the Rare Disease Database.)

Dermatolymphangioadenitis (DLA) is a disorder characterized by redness of the skin. Symptoms may include malaise, fever, and chills. DLA most often occurs after surgery, trauma, or dermatitis types of lymphedema. Studies have suggested that periodic low doses of Benzathine penicillin may be effective in preventing recurrences of DLA.

Diagnosis
The typical erysipelas lesion is so characteristic that its presence is diagnostic.

Standard Therapies
Treatment

The treatment of choice is penicillin. For the penicillin-allergic patient, erythromycin or cephalexin may be used.

Investigational Therapies

The French Erysipelas Study Group, headquartered at a major teaching hospital in Reims, France, reported recently the results of a multi-center, randomized, controlled, clinical trial of a new treatment for erysipelas involving the drug pristinamycin. The group is studying whether pristinamycin might replace oral penicillin as the drug of choice to treat this disorder.

The results of these trials are being debated among clinical researchers interested in the treatment of this disorder.

George Henry Turner was born in Frodingham, England on 23rd March 1871, the son of James and Ann Turner. He migrated to Australia on the “Merkara,” leaving from York and arriving in Moreton Bay on the 6th April,1888. He was 17yrs of age. Records list him as travelling alone, able to read and write, religion “P” and his occupation “F L” (presumably a farmer’s labourer).
Over the next few years he made his way to the Fassifern district where he gained work as a labourer and met his future wife Ida. There are no records to show that he ever applied for and purchased land.
George married Ida Elizabeth Christina Jensen on 4th October 1892, 4 1/12 years after arriving in Australia. Ida was born in Hillgroven Germany on the 23rd March 1874 and arrived in Australia with her family in 1886. George was 21yrs and Ida 18
The children who died:
William JOhn was born 24th Sept 1894. He passed away at ten months from "Rose" - an illness very much like scarlet fever.

Twin -15th March 1900 - Ida gave birth to twin boys. Only George Henry (jnr) survived. We have not got a death certificate for the twin whose head was severely deformed from the elbow of George being lodged in it during pregnancy
Lavina Alice was born on 1st November 1907. She was a healthy little girl. However she contracted polio at a young age. She died from complications associated with the polio (pneumonia and heart failure) at the tender age of 7 ½ years on the 11th March 1915. She is buried in the Kalbar Methodist Cemetery.

Violet Frances - born 27thg April 1912. Died 21st Sept 1912 from convulsions aged 4months 20 days.

The photo of George and his second wife: Ida (his first wife, died on 19th May 1929 - cancer.
George married Louisa Fawdon on 4th Oct6ober 1930.

George died 10th June 1939 - you have death certificate.

The photo I sent you of George and Ida and growing family was taken 1909.

. The twin boys were born March 1900 if memory recalls. The twin is registered as having been born and dying on the same day. No name has been recorded in Births/deaths Registers. So in 1900 if he was registered, he had to have "lived" for even but a short time. It was extremely sad - in the womb, baby George's elbow had embedded itself into the twin's head and apparently it was severely deformed. The story of this poor baby was told to us by George Junior's ( as I will refer to him as, because it gets confusing) daughter. She said that it was quite openly spoken of - so the child was not " hidden" from the family. But she said it appeared the child was not named. I must apply for the death certificate, as although we believe he was buried in the same little cemetery as the other three children, we are not sure. Babies who were still born or died matters of hours later, were often cremated in the hospital crematorium. The death certificate will of course also give a name if the baby was named. I did look for an autopsy but there is not one.

WEDDING. A very pretty wedding took place on Wednesday, January 24th, whenMiss Helena Surawski, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Su rawski, sen., was united in the bonds of holy matrimony to George, second son of Mr. and Mrs. G. H Turner. The marriage ceremony took place in St. Mary's Roman CatholiclChurch, Ipswich, Father Concanson being thle officiating clergyman. The bride, who was given away by her Father, looked charming in a gown of white Georgette, and she also wore a wreath and veil handsomely embroidered . After the ceremony they motored to the resildence of the bride's parents, where several guests awaitedthem, and showered them with con fetti. The tables were laid in the dining room, which was beautifully decorated for thle occalsion, and a lovely two-tier wedding cake adorned the bride's table. The usual toasts were honoured and then the room was cleared, and dancing, games and cards ensued, which was kept up till the small hours of the morning. Me. and Mrs. Turner. jun., were the reciplients of many valuable and useful presents, including several cheques..

41. WILLIAM DE DENE.
Writ, 18 September, 1 Edward III.
GLOUCESTER. Inq. Monday after St. Denis, 1 Edward III.
Great Dene. A messuage and a carucate of land, held of the king in chief by service of paying 10s. yearly at Newenham to the constable of the castle of St. Briavels.
Little Dene. A messuage and 2 virgates of land, held of the king in chief by service of rendering 6d. yearly at the king’s exchequer.
Lassebergh. The manor (extent given), held of Sir Hugh le Despenser, late earl of Winchester, by service of a knight’s fee.
His daughters, Joan, aged 15 years, and Isabel, aged 11 years, are his next heirs.
Certificate that upon scrutiny of the rolls and memoranda of the time of Richard de Clare, escheator, 12 Edward II, it was found that William de Dene died in the same year, and that by an inquisition then made and returned into the chancery it was found that he held his tenements in Great Dene and Little Dene of the king in chief by homage and by service of 10s. 6d. yearly; the jury knew not whether he owed therefrom any service to the king of keeping part of the forest of Dene or not: and it was found that Joan, then aged 5 years and Isabel then aged 1 month, viz.—on 28 May, 12 Edward II, were his daughters and next heirs.
Writ of certiorari, 16 February, 2 Edward III, to the treasurer and barons of the exchequer, reciting as is set forth in the foregoing inquisition and certificate, and commanding them, after examination of the rolls of such serjeanties and memoranda of the exchequer, to certify the king whether the said William de Dene held any lands and tenements of King Edward II by serjeanty or knight’s service, by reason whereof the wardship of his lands &c. ought to pertain to the king.
Endorsed. The return of this writ appears on the schedule thereto.
Enrolled in Hilary Term in the second year: roll 23.
Schedule annexed. Upon scrutiny of the rolls and memoranda of the exchequer, it was found in the roll of Memoranda of 5 Edward II that William de Dene, son and heir of William de Dene, held all his lands and tenements in Great Dene of the king in chief by service of rendering 10s. yearly at the castle of St. Briavals, and 2 virgates of land in the osier bed(?) (in Riffleto) by service of rendering 6d. yearly at the exchequer, as the same William acknowledged; and that he gave the late king 10s. 6d. for his relief for the said lands; and in like manner the said William, his father, was charged with his relief for the same lands in the year 32 Edw. I; and in like manner Henry de Dene, his grandfather, was charged with his relief for the aforesaid lands in the year 15 Edward I, as is contained in the roll of accounts of that year 15 in Gloucester. They found nothing else about the same.

DANE-COURT is a manor in the southern part of this parish [Boughton under Blean], which in antient time had owners of the same name, which they assumed from it. Sir Allan de Dane resided here in the reign of king Edward III. bearing for his arms, Gules, four fleurs de lis, or, and it continued the mansion of his descendants for divers years after; but in the reign of Henry IV. the Fogge's were become proprietors of it, the last of whom who held it was Sir John Fogge, who died possessed of it, as appears by his will, in the 6th year of Henry VII. and left it to his son Sir John Fogge, from which name it was not many years after sold to Petit, of Colkins, in which family it continued, till with that it was alienated, about the reign of king George I. to Mr. Richard Stacey, of Deptford, who passed it away, partly by marriage with his daughter and partly by sale, to Mr. Peter Rawlins, of Sheerness, whose two daughters and coheirs transferred their right in it to their respective husbands, Mr. Lambart, and John Carter, esq. and they having made a partition of their wives estates, this manor of Dane-court became the sole property of John Carter, esq. of Deal, being the son of the Rev. Nicholas Carter, D. D. and married first Frances, only daughter and heir of John Underdown, esq. who died s.p. and secondly Charlotte, youngest daughter of Peter Rawlins, esq. before-mentioned, who died in 1777, likewise s. p. His eldest sister Elizabeth, yet unmarried, is well known for her learned publications. Mr. Carter bears for his arms, Ermine, two lions rampant, combatant, gules; he is the present owner of this estate. A court baron is held for this manor.

COLKINS is a seat situated about a quarter of a mile westward from that of Brenley. It was first built by John Colkin, originally a citizen of Canterbury, who died possessed of it in the 10th year of Edward III. and there are several of his posterity who lie buried in this church. Their arms, A grissin, segreant, being figured in brass on their gravestones, though long since destroyed. These arms too are on the roof of Canterbury cloysters. There was a family of the name of Colkyn likewise at Nonington, but they bore a different coat of arms from these of Boughton. From this name it was about king Henry the VIIth.'s reign alienated to Petit, whose descendant Cyriak Petit, gent. resided here, and dying possessed of it in 1591 lies buried in this church. These Petits were a younger branch of those of Chilham, and bore for their arms, Gules, a chevron, between three leopards heads, argent, a crescent for difference. Cyriak Petit was fœdary of Kent, an office of trust and eminence, and drew up a survey of all the manors in Kent, held of the king by knight's service anno 28 Henry VIII. a valuable book, often made use of in the course of this history. (fn. 7) From him Colkins descended down to Mr. William Petit, who in king George I.'s reign alienated it to Mr. Richard Stacey, master-builder of the king's yard at Deptford, who built the present seat of Colkins, and he, partly by sale and partly by marriage with his daughter Mary, transferred his property in it to Mr. Peter Rawlins, of Sheerness, who bore for his arms, Sable, three swords in pale, the middlemost point in base, or, who left two daughters his coheirs, the eldest of whom, Mary, since married Mr. Bisby Lambart, and Caroline, the youngest, John Carter, esq. of Deal, soon after which they made a partition of his estates, and on the division, this of Colkins became the sole property of Mr. Lambart, in right of his wife. He died at Minorca a few years ago, upon which it became the property of his widow, and she now resides in it.

Received from his father's Will land in Sandwich, Kingston, Womenswold and Barham. Because of the bequests of Barham land and a bequest to the fabric of Barham church in the will of John a'Denne and then carried through in the Will of this Michael, and the fact that this Michael specifically names Thomas the elder and Thomas the younger as his sons and the fact that my Thomas in his Will is specified as being Thomas the elder, I have to conclude that this is the correct ancestry for my Thomas a'Denne.

A resident for most of his life at the manor house of East Cholderton, about a mile and a half from Andover, he recovered, after the death in 1488 of his first cousin Sir Bernard Brocas, the residence called The Vyne which their mutual grandfather, Sir Walter Sandys, had alienated to Bernard's mother, Joan Sandys Brocas, on her marriage as her dowry.

Sir William Sandys, the elder, died testate with a will dated Oct. 17, 1493 which was proved Apr. 8, 1497 [Testamenta Vetusta, pp. 432-433], which mentioned his goods at Andover and at The Vyne, his wife Margaret, and sons William and Richard.

He and Margaret were buried in a recess in the south wall of the chancel of the Chapel of the Holy Ghost. When the Chapel of the Holy Trinity was built circa 1524 adjoining this same wall, an arched opening was made between the two structures, and their monument was placed there.

Biography
William was a younger son of Sir William Sandys (1440-1496) of The Vyne, a Tudor mansion in Sherborne St. John, near Basingstoke, Hampshire. In the 1520s William Sandys, (later Baron Sandys), built a very large Tudor mansion over the site previously occupied by the far smaller original house. The mansion now belongs to the National Trust. His mother was his father's second wife, Margaret Cheyne, the daughter of Sir John Cheyne of Shurland on the Isle of Sheppey. His sister was Edith Sandys, who married firstly, Ralph Neville, Lord Neville (d. 1498),[1] the son and heir of Ralph Neville, 3rd Earl of Westmorland. As a young man, he gained preferment at Court and was soon associated with the future King Henry VIII, assisting at his knighthood and the reception of his future wife, Catherine of Aragon.

As Knight of the Body to Henry VIII he would have been a close companion to the King in the early years of the reign. In 1517 he was appointed Treasurer of Calais. He was made a Knight of the Garter, the following year (1518), and was apparently instrumental in organising the Royal meeting at the Field of the Cloth of Gold. He was created Baron Sandys of The Vyne, soon afterwards. In 1530 he was made Henry's Lord Chamberlain. Later that same year he was appointed Captain of Guisnes, a position he held until his death in 1540. Guines, to give it its modern spelling, is some 7 miles south of Calais. At the time of his appointment it was the main outpost of English authority in the Pale of Calais. Its strategic importance was considerable and this appointment was no sinecure. His responsibility for the castle and county of Guisnes took him out of England frequently, especially in the years 1526 to 1529 and again between 1538 and 1540.

It was almost certainly at Guisnes that he first contracted the sweating sickness which, in later life sometimes kept him from Court. In January 1529 he was so ill that he could not walk[2]; in October 1533 the sweating sickness returned, and by March 1534 he was so ill that he almost died[3]. This was almost certainly malaria which was rife in marshy areas of Europe at that time[4]. Guines is a low lying area, once marshy and subject to frequent flooding from the sea and land.

King Henry VIII visited him three times at the Vyne, once with his queen, Anne Boleyn, whom Sandys was later to escort to her imprisonment in the Tower. Although his sister Edith had married, secondly, Thomas Darcy, 1st Baron Darcy of Darcy,[5] one of the leaders of the Pilgrimage of Grace (1536), Sandys certainly played no part in the uprising. Indeed, in October 1536 he was summoned to "attend upon the King's own person" with 400 men[6], and, on 10 October, was ordered to muster at Ampthill, Bedfordshire, and to "prepare victuals and lodging for the King and his train"[7], a task for which he would have been well qualified as Henry's Lord Chamberlain. Later he accompanied the Duke of Norfolk as far as Cambridge but took no further action in the suppression of the rebellion.

In his later years Sandys seems to have taken no great part in court life but his responsibilities at Guisnes kept him very busy in the early years of his appointment and between 1538 and 1540. Most of his work at Guisnes involved the refortification of the castle and town. Nevertheless, despite his frequent attention to these tasks, the castle in particular was reported as being practically indefensible for much of that period. In 1540 Lord Lisle, the Lord Deputy of Calais was accused of having let the defences of Calais and Guisnes to be so reduced that they could easily have been taken by an enemy. Under suspicion, he was imprisoned in the Tower of London. Remarkably, Sandys does not appear to have been implicated.

He returned to The Vyne from Calais in October 1540. On 7 December lord Matravers, the Lord Deputy of Calais, received a message from England announcing that Sandys had died at The Vyne. On that same day Henry VIII wrote to the Council of Calais advising them that "the Lord Chamberlain, who was captain of Guisnes is dead.". On 10 October the French ambassador in London reported back to France that "lord Sens (sic) died four days ago, who was much esteemed here and was one of the few ancient captains left."[8] Sandys was the founder of the Guild of the Holy Ghost in Basingstoke and was buried in its chapel, amongst the ruins of which parts of his tomb may still be seen. He had married Margaret, the daughter of his cousin, John Bray, half-brother to Sir Reginald Bray (d.1503), one of Henry VII's powerful counsellors. They had at least three sons and four daughters, including Thomas, 2nd Baron Sandys of the Vyne, and Mary, who married Sir William Pelham, and was the mother of Sir William Pelham and Sir Edmund Pelham, Lord Chief Baron of the Irish Exchequer.

William Sandys and Anne Boleyn
Henry VIII fell for Anne Boleyn in 1526, the same year in which Sandys was appointed Lord Chamberlain and Captain of Guisnes. By 1529 Anne Boleyn was accompanying Henry as frequently as if she were the Queen. During those years Sandys spent some 18 months in Guisnes but, otherwise, his responsibilities at Court as Lord Chamberlain would have meant that he had frequent occasion to make provision for Anne Boleyn and her household, and that he would have known her well.

In 1532 he attended the ceremony at which she was raised to the peerage as the Marquess of Pembroke[9]. In 1533 he was one of the several lords who accompanied her from Greenwich to Westminster for her coronation[10]. In October 1535 he hosted her and Henry's visit to The Vyne, when she was Queen[11]. On the following 9 May Sandys was summoned to a meeting of the Privy Council to consider "matters relating to the surety of [the King's] person, his honor, and the tranquillity of the realm"[12]; on 12 May he attended the trial of the four men accused of committing adultery with the Queen and on 15 May, after escorting her from Greenwich to the Tower of London, he was one of the jury which found her guilty of adultery, incest and treason[13].

Cultural references
He is a minor character in the historical novel The Man on a Donkey by H.F.M. Prescott.

He appears in William Shakespeare's Henry VIII as Lord Sands, who flirts with Anne Boleyn when she arrives at Court and comments unfavourably upon the new fashions brought over from France.

The ruins of Thurnham Castle
High up on the North Downs with superb views to the south as can be seen at LinkExternal link Thurnham Castle consists now of just a few walls up to ten feet high.

The history of Thurnham Castle is partly conjecture. It was first mentioned in a document of 1225 but the castle may be much older than this, maybe dating to the late 11th century. The first owner is thought to have been Ralph de Courbepine (or Curbespine), a tenant of Bishop Odo of Bayeux, the half brother of William the Conqueror. Stephen de Thurnham, great grandson of Ralph de Courbepine held the manor in the 12th century during the reign of Henry II. By the 14th century the manor had passed to the Northwood family and then to Robert Corbie.

The castle was abandoned by the 15th century for Corbier Hall, south-west of Thurnham village. In 1540 the antiquarian John Leland noted that the castle was "now all clene ruine". In later centuries chalk quarrying damaged the site. Kent County Council acquired the site in 1999 to preserve it and make it accessible and the castle is now part of the White Horse Wood Country Park.

He was a British justice and administrator. In 1190 he accompanied Richard on the Third Crusade, visiting Jerusalem in 1192, and in 1193 he escorted Queen Berengaria and Joan of England on their journey from Palestine to Rome.

After this his work was limited to England, managing royal Demesnes and Escheats, as well as vacant Bishoprics. Although these jobs made the holder unpopular, he apparently had a good reputation, with Adam of Eynsham describing him as 'a faithful and godly man and devoted to our holy bishop'. From 1197 until 1200 he served as High Sheriff of Berkshire and Wiltshire, and in 1198 as High Sheriff of Lancashire. His royal favour faltered after 1200, but he was still a favorite of John, serving at various times as warden to Eleanor, Fair Maid of Brittany, Isabella of Angoulême and the future Henry III. He died on 6 March 1214 with no sons, leaving his possessions to his five daughters and their husbands.

Charter dated between 1174 and 1184.
Richard, Archbishop, on petition of Stephen de Thurnham, gives to the Abbey of Cumbwell the advowson of the Church of Thurnham, after the death of Robert its existing chaplain, and settles a dispute between Stephen and the chaplain, by providing that Stephen should grant to the Church of Thurnham six acres and three virgates eastward, in exchange for land westward in his park, and should confirm to it three acres next Dun Street, which his father had given [Michael de Thurnham?]. Robert agreeing to perform service in Stephen's chapelin his court at Thurnham, when Stephen and his family are there, on Sundays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays (feast-days excepted), and once a week in their absence to offer prayers there for the departed faithful.

On even date Stephen de Thurnham grants the Church of St. Mary at Thurnham and a garden and messuage next the church on the ast, for the better sustenance of the Vicar, to the intent that the Vicar for the time being may the better daily remember himself and his ancestors.

Charter dated May, 1194.
Stephen de Thurnham, in Chinon Castle [Touraine, France], grants to the Abbey of Cumbwell, for the sould of King Henry, the body and soul of King Richard, the souls of his father and mother and all his ancestors, and for himself and all his friends alive or dead, the Dea called LECHINCHESE, without prejudice to the right therein of the Prior of the Holy Trinity at Canterbury.

Footnote notation in source: "This interesting Charter was granted by Stephen de Thurnham about a month after the coronation of Richard I., on his return from captivity. It is remarkable for the mention of the safety of Richard's body as well as soul for one of the objects of the gift, - no unreasonable addition when we remember the state of rebellion in which he found his kingdom on his arrival at home. The spot from which it is dated, Chinon castle in Touraine, shews it to have been executed in the course of the grantor's [Stephen de Thurnham] owner safer but little less tedious journey home from the Crusade. He had not been in the King's train, but was honoured by being entrusted with the escort of Queen Berengaria, her sister, and companions, as we learn from the Chronicle of Roger Hoveden, who thus particularizes their route: -

(Savile's 'Scriptores post Bedam,' p. 417.)"

"The Castle of Chinon was, no doubt, the very point of safety for which Stephen had been making with his anxious charge through the whole of their long and perilous journey. It was situated on the borders of Touraine and Poitou, so that it is sometimes said by the Chroniclers to be in one, sometimes in the other. It was one of the strongest of the English fortresses in France, and much used as a royal residence for those provinces: - a castle, as Gulielmus Armonicus tells us, "non solum munitione, verum et edificiis, et habitatoribus, et situ amoenissimo, praeclarum." (Recucil des Hist. xvii. 80d.) Hither Henry II. had retired to died, in the middle of a campaign with Philip. (Chroniques de S. Denis, an. 1190.) Here Richard kept his reasure, which, on his death, Robert de Thurnham, then custodian, handed over to John. And hither, two years later, came Berengaria again, to receive her dower from John, who was holding his Court here. (Roger Hoveden, Savile's 'Scriptores', pp. 451, 466.) Four years later it was lost to England, Philip having taken it from John.

"The party then, safe at last on English territory, and in one of Richard's strongest castles, and fearing no more immediate danger for themselves, from either King of France or Emperor, might well take the first opportunity of doing all that in them lay for the safety of the King in the dangers which still awaited him at home, - an opportunity which, in the interest of the Church, the two monks who figure as witnesses to this Charter (their attendants and confessors probably) would certainly not let slip. Stephen's thoughts on such an occasion would naturally turn to his own Abbey at home, but we may well suppose a word to have been at the same time put in by the ecclesiastics, and probably with success, for the claims of their own respective foundations.

"I cannot help conjecturing the motto of Stephen de Thurnham, which we find on his two counterseals (Charters IX and XI) to have been assumed on the occasion of this honourable service and translating DEVS SALVET CVI MITTOR "God save her to whom I am escort." It is unfortunate that we have no specimen of his seal prior to this date which might either refute this idea by an earlier use of the motto, or strengthen the probability by its absence.

"I have placed this deed, and those following, late in Stephen's life, partly for the names of Adam d Bending and Roger de Leybourne, his sons-in-law, which occur in them. The Robert de Gatton who is witness to this may perhaps be his son-in-law's uncle, as conjectured in the Pedigree."

Charter circa 1210
Stephen de Thurnham grants to the Abbey of Cumbwell his land of Herindenn.

Charter circa 1210
Edeline de Thurnham grants to the Abbey of Cumbwell the tenement which she holds of the King at Hamwold, to be held "cum corpore suo". The grant is confirmed in a second deed of evidently even date, by Stephen de Thurnham, her husband.

Biography
George Mathew’s great-grandfather Sir David Mathew, whose fourth son founded the Radyr branch of his family, had been standard-bearer to Edward IV, but his father fought for Henry VII at Bosworth and was knighted on the field. Of his own early fortunes the most interesting, if obscure, feature is his receipt in 1536 of a royal licence to raise contributions from his kinsmen and friends throughout Wales for three years towards his release. Why he needed such help is not known, the lawsuits in which he was engaged yielding no clue, but his exploitation of a custom which had been prohibited by the Act of 1534 (26 Hen. VIII, c.6) affronted the president of the council in the marches, Bishop Rowland Lee, who reckoned that it would yield Mathew 1,000 marks. Mathew was by then embarked on the career which would bring him in turn the escheatorship and the shrievalty of Glamorgan, and the shire seat in at least one Parliament. His local allegiance was to the dominant family of Herbert, into which both he and his eldest son married. The second marriage preceded his election in 1553, when the sheriff who returned him was his daughter-in-law’s father (Sir) George Herbert. There is thus no reason to suspect any government interference on his behalf, nor that he was not as consistently loyal to Mary as his knighting at her coronation implies. His absence from her Parliaments, like his apparent retirement from the routine of the Glamorgan bench in favour of William Herbert V, may be put down to his advancing years; a summons of 1554-5 to answer in the Exchequer for retaining 16 armed and liveried men beyond the ranks of his household is unlikely to have told against him any more than it did against a similar offender in Sir George Herbert.4

Mathew died on 14 Nov. 1558, holding lands worth more than £70 a year, and was succeeded by his eldest son William who was to replace his brother-in-law William Herbert V as knight for Glamorganshire in the Parliament of 1572.5

Effigies of Sir William Mathew(d.1528) and his wife. The latest of three surviving Mathew family effigies at Llandaf Cathedral

In 1469, Thomas Mathew(d. pre 1470), the 3rd or 4th son of Sir David Mathew(d.1484) of Llandaf,[6] inherited the land through marriage to Catherine, the heiress of Radyr, and built Radyr Court, an imposing manor house on the site of what is now the Radyr Court Inn in Danescourt. The house was used as a court and although it was destroyed by a fire in the 19th century, the three large dungeons survived and can still be seen at the Inn. On Thomas' death shortly before 1470, his lands passed to his eldest son David and then to his younger son William Mathew(d.1528), who was knighted by King Henry VII at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485.[3] Sir William accompanied King Henry VIII to the Field of the Cloth of Gold in 1520. His successor was his eldest son Sir George Mathew who became the MP for Glamorgan constituency and in 1545 Sheriff of Glamorgan.

Successful Tudor nobles were expected to have extensive deer parks, but Sir George created a deer park that partially caused the decline of the family fortune, as it ranged so far to the north of Radyr it caused the previous income from tenant farmers to cease when they were evicted from their farms. He also had twenty-four children, (eight of whom were illegitimate). Many of these children were daughters and large sums of money were required to provide dowries for them. On his death Sir George's lands passed to his eldest son William, who also became a Member of Parliament and invested in the Pentyrch ironworks. This proved to be an astute move as the feudal system was being replaced by the beginnings of industrialisation. William's descendants however inherited a diminishing fortune and Captain George Mathew, the last of the family to live in Radyr, married Elizabeth Poyntz and the couple departed from Radyr to live on her estates at Thurles in County Tipperary, Ireland during 1625.

COLDBROOK FARM is a high status vernacular manor house, later a farmhouse, was restored in 2011
at which time the owners discovered, under layers of Victorian 'improvements', a wonderful house with
carved oak panelling, windows & doorways, an almost unique survival in England with a great hall that shows signs that it once included a dais for the lord of the Manor . The style of interior at Coldbrook reflects that of the great castle at Raglan and Dendrochronology from Coldbrook Farm showed it was built in 1538, with some of the wood, which would have taken years to carve by hand, was felled several years before that. Experts think the house was probably built for one of the many sons, legitimate & illegitimate, of the Earl of Pembroke, William Herbert of Raglan the great warrior knight of the Wars of the Roses.

Sir George Matthews from Rydr had a staggering number of children from 6 marriages in Rhdyr, Glamorgan Wales. Twenty-eight children in all, 13 of whom were daughters, all of whom needed a dowry.

There was a branch of the Mathews family with lands in St Kew in Cornwall. The parish appears to have early connections with Llandaff on Wales.

Domesday and St Kew was a large manor: 5 hides of land which included land for 22 ploughs.
There were 59 villagers and 26 smallholders with 20 ploughs between them. Also 1-acre of meadow, 40 acres of pasture and a large woodland; the livestock were 9 cattle and 120 sheep. The annual value was £6.

Tresonger was home of John Matthew, Gent. who married a Vivian of Truan. He was originally of Penetinny near St Kew village, who gained by marrying the heiress of Tresonger, of Tresonger in Endellion.

A younger branch of the Matthews was of Middle-Amble in Kew. The elder line of this branch became extinct before the year 1700.

Arms of Matthew of Tresonger, &c.: — Sable, a crane Argent, within a border of the second.

Originating from Gamorganshire the Irish branch of the Mathews migrated to the West Indies and to Cornwall. Abendigo Mathew of Pennetinny (farm) in St Kew born 1629 emigrated to the West Indies, and married a West Indian heiress Miss Sparrow.

Mathew in Visitations

William Mathew of Penetinny married 1st Emlin Rowse of Tresunger Widow of John Linan 2nd marriage to a Vivian 3rd unclear. He had children by all 3 wives.

William Mathew by 1st wife married a Wellington whose son John Mathew of Penytinny married Winifred Stone dau of John of Stone of Trevigo - another daughter of John Stone was Mary Stone who married Digory Hext of Launceston and their daughter Jane hext heiress to her father and her grandfather married Andrew Pomeroy, the younger, at St Kew in 1601.

Coldbrook Farm

From derelict farmhouse on brink of collapse to dream dwelling

It was a derelict farmhouse on the brink of collapse but after years of painstaking restoration, the sixteenth century dwelling deep in the Monmouthshire heartland has been restored to its former glory... with a stylish modern touch.

Coldbrook Farm, near Raglan, was in ruin when Bill Parry, 50, who grew up on the farm next door, purchased the property thirteen years ago.

A few years later he met Kim Harris, 46, and the pair decided to embark on the ambitious building project, with a dream to one day start a family and move to Coldbrook Farm.

“It is a lovely old house with lots of splendid features,” Ms Harris, an events sales director, said. “But it had to be restored. Short of the roof falling in, it really was in a bit of a state.”

The restoration, which began in Spring 2011, was budgeted at £350,000 but the final bill came to £400,000. A staggering £25,000 was spent on one staircase alone, which ascends two stories and took 700 hours to construct.

Ms Harris said: “The architects were very good at persuading us to do things nicely. We might have cut some corners if it wasn’t for them - and we certainly wouldn’t have thought of spending that much on the staircase!”

The biggest problem they encountered was dealing with the bats, which cost almost £10,000 alone. “It was preposterous,” Ms Harris said. “There is all this regulation about how to deal with bats. We had to employ a conservation company, get a bat survey and a bat license, and then build a great big bat loft in the barn. The whole thing was a total rip-off.”

Mr Parry, an insurance loss adjuster, Ms Harris and their three children used to live in West London and would visit Coldbrook Farm on weekends. When they decamped for Monmouthshire in summer 2011, they lived in a caravan in the garden until the farmhouse was ready to move into that autumn.

Ms Harris said: “The BBC approached us, explaining that they were looking for interesting buildings which they could find out about the history. We didn’t necessarily want to be on the telly although it was great fun.

“We are really absolutely thrilled with the result. Neither of us have ever lived in a house like this. It’s like stepping back in time living out here - the scenery, the environment, the rural community feel. Everywhere you look it is lovely.”

The house, which contains some of the most exceptional Tudor timber work in all of Wales, was a “documentary blank” according to Richard Suggett, of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales.

By analysing tree rings on the timber work, Dr Dan Miles of the Oxford Dendrochronology Laboratory, was able to date the building to 1538.

Mr Suggett advanced a theory that Coldbrook had been built for a descendent of the Earl of Pembroke, who owned the nearby Raglan Castle, and who settled his many illegitimate children on nearby estates.

Restoration Home One Year On will air 8pm on BBC 2 on Thursday, February 6.

ite Description Coldbrook is a mid to late sixteenth century farmhouse with late seventeenth century alterations. It has been interpreted as, possibly, the solar added to a medieval hall, the hall then replaced by a kitchen in the late seventeenth century. The farmhouse is a two storey whitewashed roughcast over rubble stone building with a slate roof and end stacks. It has a 3 bay front with a central twentieth century porch and twentieth century windows. A two storey rear parlour projection gable has an ornate moulded oak window frame, chamfered with mason-mitred joints. The mullions are longer present having been replaced by a modern casement pair.

The oldest part of the farmhouse contains highly enriched woodwork notably to the ceiling beams and joists of the hall, which have four bead moulds converging at ends and slightly different wave moulds with converging stops to joists. There is similar bead moulding to the parlour window and doorway. Less important rooms have hollow chamfered beams with stepped hollow stops or flat chamfers with diagonal stops.

Additional:

Coldbrook Farm is one of Fox and Raglan's classic sub-medieval vernacular houses (Monmouthshire Houses, Vol. II). The house is fully two storeyed with attics and has extraordinarily impressive roll-moulded beams and other timberwork included screens on ground and first floors. Coldbrook is best interpreted as an early hearth-passage house of extraordinary quality. Replanning in the C17th involved the addition of a new parlour and central entry. The hall became a working kitchen and the former doorway from the hearth-passage was modified to accommodate an oven. Additional details not recorded by Fox and Raglan includes projecting 'lamp-stands' on either side of the hall fireplace. The house was planned by Leonard Monroe of RCAHMW. The moulded door-frame btween hall and projecting parlour is illustrated in Houses of the Welsh Countryside, Fig. 168b. R.F. Suggett/RCAHMW/Nov. 2010.
