My GGF Walter Robert LANE (1863-1940) = Emily BATEMAN (1863-1941) in Barton Regis, Bristol in 1884. The family moved from Bristol c1895. In 1901 they were already at 90 Rutter Street, Walsall, STS, with two surviving children of their 17-year marriage to date; Fred LANE (1889-1926) and Adeline Elizabeth Bateman LANE (aged 9), both born Bristol. By 1911 in Regent Road, Handsworth the two surviving children were Fred & Nora (my grandmother), Adeline having died in 1910 aged 18. Walter was boarding in Chilvers Coton, Nuneaton in 1911, a newspaper advertisement canvasser.
Based on one family picture and length of marriage, it assumed that most children of Walter & Emily died in childhood and only Fred & Nora survived to adulthood, and then only Nora to old age. Many infant deaths are recorded for LANE in the Walsall & West Bromwich RDS with possible naming patterns. A Walter William LANE in 1899-1900 Walsall could suggest the family were there by that time, however a distant LANE family was also present in Walsall and perhaps were known to each other.
A key family reference photo is show below. It was thought to show Walter & Emily with 5 children, however there is no time whereby their children would be alive in the configuration shown. It is not clear whether the oldest son, Fred, is in the picture (sitting left, or taking the picture) and that his wife may be the one standing. The girl sitting right would appear to be my grandmother Nora, and Betty LANE (d/o Fred, who would later be Nora's bridesmaid) is the girl in the middle. The identification of the 2 young men in this photo remains a mystery (assuming it is Walter & Emily as the older generation):
· Unknown 7th child in period 1884-1911 (based on number of children born alive and subsequently died declared on the 1911 census);
· Fred LANE (1889-1926) = Ada SMITH in 1917 West Bromwich (see photo above). BMD suggests the following possible children (the history of only one is known):
o Edith LANE (Aston, 1918);
o Betty June LANE (King's Norton, 1921), was the niece and bridesmaid at my grandmother's wedding in 1927 = Reginald Geoffrey CLARKE (1921-97);
o George E LANE (King's Norton, 1922);
o Sheila M LANE (King's Norton, 1923);
· Wilfred LANE (1890-91 Bristol);
· Adeline Elizabeth Bateman LANE (1891-1910);
· Wilfred LANE (1895-95 Bristol);
· William Walter LANE (1899-1900 Walsall);
· Elsinora Alicia Patricia LANE, (1904-85) my grandmother, was born in Rutter Street, Walsall in the West Midlands = William Sanders GRACE in 1927. They had only one child, my father. | LANE, Walter Robert (I16243)

According to telephone conversation I had with Marilynne Meiklejohn, Donald and Helen settled in Montreal circa 1967 but camped in New York State during summer months. The woman I spoke with never knew Helen's brother, Walter and had met him only once. Donald and Helen eventually moved to Florida where she died of a massive heart attck after a meal. She was cremated down there. Donald came back to Canada but returned to Florida and remarried circa 2007/8. He eventually died of prostate cancer. His second wife was named Elizabeth and she had children in Pennsylvania.
Dennis George Moore married Susan and lived at 20 Belcourt Crescent, Guelph, N1H 7A7 in February 2011. 519-821-6236. They have two children Kelly and Jeff who are both married. According to Marilynne Meiklejohn Dennis would be the better person to contact about the Youngson family history.
Ronald Moore married Barbara and lived at 128 Denny Drive, Angus, Ontario, L0M 1B1 705-424-2545 but now live in Barrie and have no children.
A person by the name of David Moore ran Davis and Moore Insurance in Hamilton and did a lot of family history research but never compiled it. His wife is in Burlington and there is a Tom McAllan in Texas also interested in Moore research. Brian had 2 children born in the U.S.A. having lived in N.Y. State. He divorced and moved back to Guelph. Sandy Jagger, a cousin in Florida did one line back to Charlemagne. Her mother died circa 2011. Her name was Ruth Jagger and was a first cousin of Marilynne Meiklejohn.

Mrs. J. Nicol looked worried when she saw her son. Cpl. Gordon Nicol, of 625 Victor street, for he had
been- sea-sick on the way over. "I'm no sailor mother," he smiled. "All I'm worried about now is
geting some good food in me," he added as he hurried out of the station. He has been in England
just over three years, serving in the ground crew as a mechanic. On hand to greet him were his mother,
his sister-in-law, Mrs. A. Nicol, of 304 Harbison avenue and" his six year-old nephew, Alex.

GORDON NICOL
GORDON SIMPSON NICOL With great sadness, we announce the sudden and peaceful passing of Gordon Nicol on Thursday, April 4, 2002. He will be sadly missed by his wife Tilly of 55 years; his son David; cherished grandchildren, Scott and Melissa; sisters-in-law, Irene and Alma (Reg), as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Euphamia and John, five brothers and special daughter-in-law Susan. For several years he worked with the British American Oil Company, before joining the Winnipeg School Board as a custodian until his retirement. The one thing he loved most in life was telling stories and visiting with people. Throughout his life, Dad enjoyed travelling and spending leisurely summers at the cottage with his family. He was an avid bowler and curler, and was a season ticket holder of the Blue Bombers for over 50 years. He also was a strong supporter of the Jets and the Moose. Funeral service will be held on Monday, April 8 at 1:00 p.m. in the Leatherdale Gardiner Funeral Chapel, 1501 Waverley St. with Pastor D. Lowe officiating. MATILDA NICOL
MATILDA "TILLIE" NICOL On Monday, March 15, 2004, after a lengthy battle with Alzheimers, Asthma and Diabetes, Tillie passed away with her family at her side. She leaves to mourn her son David; grandchildren, Scott and Melissa; sisters, Alma (Reg) and Irene and a multitude of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her loving husband Gordon; brother Ralph; sisters, Mary and Ella; sister-in-law Mary; brother-in-law Charlie; and special daughter-in-law Susan. Tillie was born in Winnipeg on September 16, 1915. From humble beginnings on Alexander Avenue, she eventually moved with her sisters to Victor Street in the West End. After a brief career in the garment industry, she married the boy next door at the end of the War. Tillies life focused around family values. Many happy summer days were spent at the cottage in Ponemah looking after not only her son but also all her nieces and nephews. Tillie also enjoyed traveling, listening to classical music, bowling, square dancing, cooking, baking and gardening. For a lady of such small stature she made a large impact on many people and was loved by all. The family would like to thank the staff at Beacon Hill Lodge for all their kind and special attention in making Tillies last few years as comfortable as possible. Special thanks also go out to her loving sister Irene, who devoted the last few years in the pursuit of enhancing Tillies quality of life. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 26 at 1:00 p.m. in the Garry Memorial Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. with Pastor Ted Chell officiating.
