4278 Text: The said Peter also held the manor of Oxenhale in fee tail, with contingent remainder, in case of his death without issue, to Thomas de Grandissone. It is held of Roger de Mortimer, Earl of March, as of the inheritance of Geoffrey de Geneuyle, as half a knight's fee. 4284 The burial entry of 1791 doesn't distinguish which William Harris was buried. So, it is impossible to determine if this is the correct William Harris, or if it was William Harris the grandson who had been baptised in Lifton on 9 Sep 1787.
==========================================================================
In medieval times Lifton, as a Royal Manor, was in the gift of the Sovereign and it was held for its revenues by a member of the royal family or a court favourite. It changed hands many times, very few of the owners ever coming to visit Lifton. However Charles I did spend a night in the village in 1644 during the civil war. By this time Lifton was no longer a Royal Manor. The estate had been sold by Queen Elizabeth I to a local landowner, William Harris of Hayne. The Harris of Hayne estate was vast with thousands of acres in other counties as well as in Devon. The Harris family were linked by marriage to several Royalist families in Cornwall, including the Arundells and by 1755 the Arundells had inherited the Manor of Lifton.

4285 The burial on 23 Apr 1799 does not specify if this Mary was a daughter, a wife or a widow. So it is impossible at this time to determine if the burial referred to this Mary or not.

Possible baptism at Whitchurch, 26 Jan 1719/20 daughter of John Rapson, who also had James at this same parish 31 Mar 1718.

Buried at Lifton was a Rebeckey Rapson 16 Apr 1759.

4288 The christening entry for this George simply reads "George son of John Hording" and it specifically does not record a mother's name contrary to the baptismal entry for Susanna Horden in 1683 wherein the parents' names are recorded as "Susanna daughter of John Hording by Susanna his wife".

Burial entry reads: "...George son of John Hording"

The Clunies Ross Family
Charles (~1845-1910)
Edwin (~1847-1888)
Alfred (~1851-1903)
Alexander (1858- ? )

THE COCOS (KEELING) ISLANDS were named after sighting of the group by Captain William Keeling in 1609. On the 6th December 1825 Captain John Clunies Ross, when on a short stop over on the Islands, cleared an area on Direction and Horsburgh Island and planted cereal and vegetable crops. At the time, Captain Ross was sailing a trading vessel called the Borneo for Alexander Hare's trading company. It wasn't until the following year that a settlement was established by Alexander Hare. With him, he brought a crew of mainly Sumatran and Javanese seamen and women of various nationalities. John Clunies Ross then settled himself on the South Island and was determined to establish a good reputation in trading; Hare on the other hand led a colourful, free and easy life. He desired and sought obscurity and his behaviour, according to Clunies Ross, became unbalanced. Both Hare and Clunies Ross put forward claims for ownership of the Islands. However in 1831 Hare left and died soon after in Batavia. From then on the people of Cocos planted coconut trees from which they extracted the oil to sell and trade as Copra.

So it was that John Clunies Ross, born in Weisdale,Shetland Islands, became the owner of a large Copra farm on a remote island in the Indian Ocean. His Malay workers addressed him as 'Tuan' (equivalent to 'sir') and it was this term that has wrongly been translated as 'King'. This was the start of the myth of the 'Monarchs of Cocos', a myth that has persisted ever since. John died in 1854 and his son, John George, took over the running of the islands. He was referred to as 'Tuan pandai" (clever or learned) by the Malays. He died in 1872. George, the eldest son of John George, ran the islands from 1872-1910. Four of John George's other sons, namely Charles, Edwin, Alfred and Alexander, were all educated at Madras College, St Andrews, Scotland

Charles Clunies Ross
(~1845 - 1910)
Charles was born about 1845 on the Cocos Islands. He attended Madras College and subsequently St Andrew's University. In 1869 he started working for his father at Cocos. He married his cousin Emily Clunies-Ross in 1871 and had a family of 6 children.

In 1885 Charle's brother 'King' George sailed his newly finished schooner the 'John George Clunies Ross' to England he left Charles in charge of the Islands. It was during this time that E.W. Birch visited the islands to write the government report. He wrote of Charles - "He is a strong, active man, and like his brothers Edwin and Alfred, was a great football player, boxer, and fencer in his younger days. He was brought up to Engineering. He is a hardworking and astute man"

Charles left Cocos in 1902 with his family and went to live in Singapore, where he died in 1910.

Edwin Clunies Ross
(~1847 - 1888)

In 1885
Edwin was born about 1847 on Cocos. Like his older brother Charles he attended Madras College and then St Andrews University. He subsequently worked in Batavia at the Chartered Mercantile Bank there and spent his holidays at Cocos. He married his cousin Harriett at Cocos in 1876 and thereafter appears in the annual census as resident there. They had a family of 7 children. He died at Cocos in 1888.

Alfred Clunies Ross
(~1851 - 1903)

In 1871 playing for Scotland against England in the first ever Rugby International. View the Whole Team Photo

In 1885 back in Cocos
Alfred was born around 1851 on Cocos. After attending Madras College he then studied medicine in Edinburgh and during 1873 worked at St George's Hospital in London.. E.W. Birch in his government report around 1885 wrote of Alfred: "He was a medical student but did not graduate. He lives at the Cocos and is the doctor of the place. He is a bachelor, an exceedingly well-informed man, talks well on most subjects, and is very popular with the natives. He is an excellent carpenter." He married his cousin Ellen at Cocos in 1886 and they had 5 children.

The "St Andrews Gazette" records a cricket match played between St Andrews University and Madras College in March 1864 (Madras won by 21 runs) and mentions "the very clever hitting and fielding of Affie Ross, a lively and smart little fellow, to all appearances not yet reached his teens". He is also recorded playing a football fixture on 9th January, 1869 at the Baxter Park, Dundee against Aberdeen University. He is there referred to as Alf Ross and his brother Alex Ross was also in the team. Alfred was also an excellent Rugby Football player. During his stay in Edinburgh he played in the very first Rugby Football International between Scotland and England. The Rugby Football Union was newly formed and the first fixture they arranged was a match on 27th March 1871 at Raeburn Place, Edinburgh, between Scotland and England. Alfred was in the Scottish XX team that day. The result was a victory for Scotland.. He subsequently played for the Wasps (1874-80) during his time in London.

In 1888 Alfred went to work in North Borneo. In 1901 he became seriously ill and moved to Singapore. He returned to Cocos to recuperate in 1902 but died in 1903.

Alexander Clunies Ross
(1858 - ? )
Alexander was born in 1858 on Cocos. He was educated at Madras College and subsequently became a student in Edinburgh studying navigation. He returned to the Cocos Islands around 1876 and in 1879 he married Salpia. E.W. Birch in his government report around 1885 wrote of Alfred: "He was brought up as a sailor. He is married and has two little girls. They all live at the Cocos. He is in charge of the boats, sails, etc.". His family finally numbered 4 children.

In 1889 Alexander sailed to Christmas Island with his brother Andrew to start a settlement there. It is not known when he died.

He is also recorded playing a football fixture on 9th January, 1869 at the Baxter Park, Dundee against Aberdeen University. He is there referred to as Alex Ross and his brother Alf Ross was also in the team.

4291 The death certificate for Stephen Jemmett indicates that he worked as a plasterer during his lifetime and that the causes of death of were coronary sclerosis and arterio sclerosis. The death certificate also records his birthdate as 4 Oct 1870 and not 4 Oct 1868. There is no doubt that this Stephen Jemmet was the son of William Henry Jemmett and Alice Matilda Spillett as both names and places of birth of parents were recorded as expected. JEMMETT, Stephen (I8010)

4292 The death date is calculated based on the Will of Matthew Austin, senior of Wye who mentions his son Matthew in it in 1635 and Matthew, Jr.'s own son, Thomas of Harbledown whose Will date 1661 indicates that his father, Matthew is deceased. AUSTIN, Matthew (I12004)

4293 The details are from the original parish register for Elham wherein the marriages is recorded as being between "Richard Strowd" and "Anne Ruck" on the 15th of May 1611. FHL film #1836029. Bishop's Transcripts of Elham name the parties as "Richard Stroud" and "Agnes Rich" married 15 May 1611, FHL film #1736696.  Family (F4206)

4294 The earliest reference to Edward is the inclusion of his name on the Burgess Roll of 1837/38. He did not appear on subsequent rolls, although, we do know that he did not die until April of 1857. His civil death certificate is entered on the index in the June quarter 1857 at Faversham district, volume 2a, page 321. Edward's son, Charles, did not survive past his third year of life and was buried on 6 November 1838.

In 1841 Edward and Christian had living with them, Thomas Gregory, widower, also a dredger, aged 75 to 79 years. Thomas is shown simply as being a relative and presumably was Edward's uncle. The family lived on Water Lane and Edward worked as a fisherman.

In 1851 Edward was still living on Water Lane and had taken Daniel as an apprentice in the Faversham Oyster Fishery Company as a dredger. Edward III and John, both sons of Edward and Christian, had married by 1851. Rebecca was also living and working away from home.

1861 saw Christian widowed and living with her daughter, Emma, then married to Archibald Duncan. Thomas and William, Emma's brothers, were also living with the family. Their address was 5 St. Mary's Road, 'Gillows Meadows', Faversham. Thomas and William were both mariners as was Archibald Duncan. Visiting were two other children: Henry Smeed aged 1, the son of Emma's sister Mary Ann who had married Henry Smeed; and one young girl named Amelia, aged 14, a pupil teacher born at Ramsgate. Christian died during the June quarter of 1871 at age 70 years. She is shown on the G.R.O. index of deaths as Catherine Gregory. References are volume 2a, page 433, Faversham district.

Her Chr. 22 starts a shade later than Ians but ends at exactly the same spot. Therefore, she must also be a Gregory cousin.

So, that section of Chromosome 22 can point to other Gregory cousins or their wives. I will have to follow the trails so that I can identify Amanda Smith. Associated with her profile is a maternal link to the surname Stone from Kent.

4295 The Evans family was found in 1871 at Lewannick, Cornwall, District 8, schedule #28 as follows:

Richard Evans, head of household, married, age 53, a cordwainer, born Landulph, Cornwall
Mary Evans, wife, age 48 (born circa 1823) at North Lew, Devon
Mary H. Evans, daughter, age 14, born Lewannick
Henry Evans, son, age 11, born Lewannick
William J. Evans, son, age 9, born Lewannick
with a lodger, possibly an apprentice: Richard P. Williams, unmarried, age 25, journeyman cordwainer, born Launceston, Cornwall.

Mary Evans (nee Hill) died at age 87 years.
HILL, Mary (I312)

4296 The existence of children belonging to John is taken from the Will of his brother, Simon written in 1628. That Will provides bequests to "four children of my nephew John" with the only child named being "William son of John". However, in the Will of John Rucke of Sheldwich, brother of this mentioned Simon Rucke, also mentions the same nephew John as being the son of their brother William and John having a son named William and two daughters named Margaret and Thomsyn leaving only one child of the four unnamed.

4298 The Family of John LANE (my 2nd Great Granduncle) & Fanny PROCTOR of Taunton:
[Taunton until c1870, then Bristol (1881), Plymouth (1891) & Devonport (1901)]

John LANE (c1843 Taunton – after 1901), Iron Moulder, & wife Fanny PROCTOR (1844 of Wellington, Somerset – after 1901) married in Taunton in 1864. BMD & baptism records show that the couple had at least 13 children, suggesting significant descendants in the SW of England and possibly overseas. This is unconfirmed by 1911 census details as both are missing. 5 of their children were baptised on the same day in 1886 at Redcliffe St Mary, Bristol. The couple last confirmed appearance in the UK is on the 1901 Plymouth census. As no clear death records are indicated it is possible they left England to join family overseas before 1911 (noting a son emigrated around 1901), however stories in one family line suggests John may have died in the Workhouse, and therefore in England:

· Arthur James Proctor LANE (1878 Bristol – 1957 Minnesota, USA), m. 1898 Plymouth = Louisa HEALY. Arthur arrived in the US c1903, after abandoning his wife Louisa in England. It is unlikely they divorced, making his subsequent marriages illegal. The US family report he entered the US illegally from Canada. In the 1911 UK census Louisa is a married servant in Plymouth and dies there a widow after AJPL's death. The are no indicated children from this relationship. The 1901 census in Plymouth had Arthur & Louisa LANE present with their ages but then a list of LANEs and an Elizabeth HEALY all crossed out (suggesting they incorrectly filled out all their living relatives even though not resident with them). In order, they were William, Walter, Fanny, Florence, Rose, Harry, Albert, Nellie, Ernest, Harold & Frederick, which match the age order of Arthur's siblings, excluding Frank. This was probably an error by Arthur to fill out his entire family as the siblings were elsewhere. It does, however, independently confirm the full list of his siblings. Why Frank was left out is unknown.

In the US, AJPL appears in Summit, Ohio in 1910 with Canadian wife Ada NORTON (d/o Thomas NORTON of Lucan, Ontario) and their 4 y.o. daughter Dorothy LANE (born 1906 in Manhattan, New York). They were probably married in Canada or Ohio around 1904/1905. It is unclear what happens to both Ada & Dorothy (who may have returned to Canada post-divorce), however by 1912 AJPL is in Wisconsin having married Aurelia M WALDO (1897-1987), which produced the 5 children listed below. In 1917 (when he enlists), he is in Stark, North Dakota, working as a movie film operator in the Rialto cinema, confirmed as married to Aurelia. By 1920 he is a theatre manager in Minneapolis, Hennepin, Minnesota. The family report that he was divorced at the time but he kept his children in an orphanage, even though they were also appearing on stage at his theatre. After their divorce, Aurelia married Joseph George JABER (1889-1978) in 1929 Summit, Ohio (lived in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin), then Anton “Tony” Droxler KILDAY (1905-1979) before 1940, before moving to Los Angeles, in California. AJPL married Swedish widow Hilda Victoria DOYLE in Minnesota abt 1935, both living there until their deaths in the 1950's. The 5 known children of AJPL & Aurelia WALDO are:

o Harriet E “Hattie” LANE (1912 Wisconsin – 2001 Minnesota) = Arthur G SNEEN;

o Robert Frederick LANE aka Robert James Frederick LANE (1913 Wisconsin - 1981 Covina, LA, CA) = Dorothy Louise BALLARD in 1932 Fillmore. Dorothy remarried after divorce to Oral Otis PARROTT (1907-1979) in 1946. Robert remarried to Doris (their marriage lasted less than 10 years following the death of their son John “Johnny” LANE aged 8 (buried Fort Snelling)). Robert's 3rd wife was Betty A. Robert served in the US army and gained a Bronze Star & Purple Heart. Robert & Dorothy had 2 children:

4299 The fifth child of Edward and Christian Gregory, Daniel started his employment years as an apprentice with his father dredging for oysters.

On December 25th, 1853, Daniel married Mercy Hobbs and had his first child at Faversham, Emma Eliza who was christened on 1 April 1855 in Faversham parish church. By 1857 the family had moved to Oare where two more children were born - Edward and William. At the time of the 1861 census Daniel and family were living at "the Cottages", Luddenham and Daniel continued in his occupation as dredger. The family returned to Faversham during the early 1860s and two more children were born - Henry and Lilly A.. Also during 1875 Daniel's eldest daughter, Emma Eliza married Robert Edward Claringbould (also known as Cladingbold), a gardener at Stourmouth.

By 1881 Daniel, his wife and the two youngest children were living on Seagate Street in Folkestone, their two oldest children already having married. Daniel had become a licensed victualler.
