Notes for NOEL CHAMBERLAIN:
Noel was born sep 3, 1887 the son of Morris Chamberlain and his second wife Mary Wildman. Morris was a grocers assistant and Noel had step brothers Lionel and Harry and sister Leila. He also had a younger sister Ruth. In 1891 N Chamberlain is 4, R Chamberlain 3, L Chamberlain 14, H Chamberlain 12, L Chamberlain 10 , M Chamberlain 45 and Mary Chamberlain 40. They live at 30 Wood Strett , Hinckley, Leicester. In 1901 Morris Chamberlain is 57 and a grocers assistant, Mary is 50, Noel is 14 and a printers assistant and Ruth M. is 13. They live at 200 Knighton Lane, Ayestone, St. James, Leicester. (formerly Aylestone). Noel left England for Canada on the Virginian of the Allan Ship line. The ship left Liverpool apr 28, 1911 and arrived in Quebec may 6, 1911. Noel passenger # 88428 was 24, single of the Church of England and headed for Winnipeg. His friend Thomas Dann #88429 came with him and was 24 and a baptist from England also bound for Winnipeg. Both said they had been Asylum attendants and intended to become farmers. Shortly there after Noel joined the 27th Light Horse in Winnepeg. This was the Royal North West Mounted Police in which he served until June of 1916. One of his points was Tugaske where he had served with Jim Edge for a time. Noel joined the Canadian Over-seas Expeditionary Force at Tugaske jun 26, 1916. His next of kin were his father Morris Chamberlain and mother Mary Chamberlain of 30 Shakespeare Street, Leicester, Leicestershire. He was 27 years 9 mo old with a fair complextion, blue eyes and fair hair. Regimental # was 255882. He joined the 210 battalion at Moose Jaw.
The 210th battalion was begun at mooseJaw in march of 1916. Recruits were housed in the Douglas block on Main Street. There were 521 members who took their summer training at Camp Hughs 30 miles from Moose Jaw before returning in the winter. Their last parade in Moose jaw was march 16, 1917 where they were presented with a set of colors by the Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan. The battalion was then shipped to Halifax where they left Canada apr 12, 1917 on the SS Carpathia with 19 officers and 475 NCO's and men. They arrived in Liverpool apr 22, 1817 and were immediately shipped to Bramsfield Camp where they joined the 19th holding company. The company was being disbanded and the troops were used as reinforcements for existing regiments. Noel was posted to the 1st CMR. jun 16, 1917 and landed in France jun 18, 1916.This would have made him part of the Canadian Third Division. He joined 1st CMR. 8 Canadian Field Artillary jul 22 and was transfered the 10th CFA aug 25, 1917 in the field. He then rejoined the 1st Canadian Mounted Rifles sep 12, 1917. He was then granted leave jan 22- feb 7, 1818 when he returned to England for his sisters wedding. He was made a Lance Corporal in the field sep 23, 1918. He was in charge of his machine gun crew. The next entry was sep 30, 1918 when he was wounded. He had to walk to an aid station (#7 CSH near Camiens) where he was treated for gsw to hip and right arm.From there he went to # 30 Casualty Clearing Station which at the time (sep 1818-oct 1818) was located at Boisleux Au Mont and from there he arrived at 22 General Hospital oct 2, 1818 located at Camiers (jun15, 1918-jan 19 1919) . He was shipped to SRD in Antwerpen oct 11, 1818 where he was shipped to Bramsfield in England oct 11, 1818. He spent the rest of the time until jul 14, 1919 recovering in England when he returned to Canada on casualty list B563 and sailing list 508MD 12. He sailed on the Essequibo and took leave in Boston. Posted to hospital in Moose Jaw jul 30, 1919 he recieved leave jul 30-aug 12 when he was discharged as medically unfit aug 15, 1919. He recieved an honorable a discharge recieving the British War Medal and Victory Medal as well he was entitled to wear one gold casualty stripe. He had served 16 months in France. The battle of "The Canal du Nord" a series of battles designed to capture German positions opposite an unfinished canal took place sep 27- oct 1, 1918. This was likely the area where Noel was wounded in France.
Following his return to Canada he took up farming on land located north of Tugaske and just a few miles from the homestead of Frederick Greenfield. From here he met and married their youngest daughter Amy Florence Greenfield whom he married nov 18, 1921 in Moose Jaw. His farming career was short lived for when the post office opening came up in Tugaske he applied for it and recieved it in november of 1923. This was a career that was to last for 33 years and when he retired in 1956 he had served on town counsel as counsellor and overseer as well as on the credit union board of directors, and in the lodge. He and Amy retired to their home on Prairie Street before selling it and moving to a smaller house on Ogema Street two doors down from daughter Ruth. Noel and Amy lived there until their death's, Amy in 1962 and Noel in 1970. Following Amys death Noel made a trip back to England to visit his sister and see some of the old sights from his youth.
In 1916 Noel is 28 and a constable with the RNWMP. He is stationed at Tugaske with Jim Edge as Jr. constable. He was born in England and came to Canada in 1908.
