| Notes |
George Henry Turner was born in Frodingham, England on 23rd March 1871, the son of James and Ann Turner. He migrated to Australia on the “Merkara,” leaving from York and arriving in Moreton Bay on the 6th April,1888. He was 17yrs of age. Records list him as travelling alone, able to read and write, religion “P” and his occupation “F L” (presumably a farmer’s labourer).
Over the next few years he made his way to the Fassifern district where he gained work as a labourer and met his future wife Ida. There are no records to show that he ever applied for and purchased land.
George married Ida Elizabeth Christina Jensen on 4th October 1892, 4 1/12 years after arriving in Australia. Ida was born in Hillgroven Germany on the 23rd March 1874 and arrived in Australia with her family in 1886. George was 21yrs and Ida 18
The children who died:
William JOhn was born 24th Sept 1894. He passed away at ten months from "Rose" - an illness very much like scarlet fever.
Twin -15th March 1900 - Ida gave birth to twin boys. Only George Henry (jnr) survived. We have not got a death certificate for the twin whose head was severely deformed from the elbow of George being lodged in it during pregnancy
Lavina Alice was born on 1st November 1907. She was a healthy little girl. However she contracted polio at a young age. She died from complications associated with the polio (pneumonia and heart failure) at the tender age of 7 ½ years on the 11th March 1915. She is buried in the Kalbar Methodist Cemetery.
Violet Frances - born 27thg April 1912. Died 21st Sept 1912 from convulsions aged 4months 20 days.

. The twin boys were born March 1900 if memory recalls. The twin is registered as having been born and dying on the same day. No name has been recorded in Births/deaths Registers. So in 1900 if he was registered, he had to have "lived" for even but a short time. It was extremely sad - in the womb, baby George's elbow had embedded itself into the twin's head and apparently it was severely deformed. The story of this poor baby was told to us by George Junior's ( as I will refer to him as, because it gets confusing) daughter. She said that it was quite openly spoken of - so the child was not " hidden" from the family. But she said it appeared the child was not named. I must apply for the death certificate, as although we believe he was buried in the same little cemetery as the other three children, we are not sure. Babies who were still born or died matters of hours later, were often cremated in the hospital crematorium. The death certificate will of course also give a name if the baby was named. I did look for an autopsy but there is not one.
WEDDING. A very pretty wedding took place on Wednesday, January 24th, whenMiss Helena Surawski, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Su rawski, sen., was united in the bonds of holy matrimony to George, second son of Mr. and Mrs. G. H Turner. The marriage ceremony took place in St. Mary's Roman CatholiclChurch, Ipswich, Father Concanson being thle officiating clergyman. The bride, who was given away by her Father, looked charming in a gown of white Georgette, and she also wore a wreath and veil handsomely embroidered . After the ceremony they motored to the resildence of the bride's parents, where several guests awaitedthem, and showered them with con fetti. The tables were laid in the dining room, which was beautifully decorated for thle occalsion, and a lovely two-tier wedding cake adorned the bride's table. The usual toasts were honoured and then the room was cleared, and dancing, games and cards ensued, which was kept up till the small hours of the morning. Me. and Mrs. Turner. jun., were the reciplients of many valuable and useful presents, including several cheques..
