CHARGE OF ASSAULT - At the Police-court on Saturday Robert Smith and Eli Baker, both labourers of Bishop's Hull, were charged with wounding Thomas Howard, and assaulting his wife on the 14th of January. The complainant, who is a coachman in the employ of Mr. Scott, of Mulligan-hall, said he went into the New Inn, Bishop's Hull, on Saturday night and found Baker there having a dispute with some one. He took no part in the dispute, but went home. Shortly after turning out time, hearing a noise in the road, he opened the door and was immediately set upon by the two defendants who kicked him and beat him about the head. The complainant's wife came out to ascertain the causae of the row and she was also assaulted. it was alleged on the other side that Howard was the aggressor, and witnesses were called who stated that this was so.
